The principal early Christian sects are generally known today as Catholic Orthodox Christianity and Gnosticism, although other groups also existed.

Roman state patronage for the Catholic Orthodox Church ensured that it was able to expropriate the property of other churches which did not share their views, and provided a cover for persecution until there was essentially only one Christian Church left in the Roman Empire.

The view held by religious authorities in the mainly Greek-speaking eastern regions was that there were 5 senior leaders, or Metropolitans, in this Christian Church, one of whom was the bishop of Rome. However, the bishop of Rome, designated as the Pope, insisted that he had greater authority than the other Metropolitans. Gradually, differences built up until the Great Schism of 1054, when Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Michael I excommunicated each other. There were attempts at reconciliation and the Churches came close to being reunited in 1274 and in 1439, but the schism eventually became permanent.

The western Church, based on Rome, has become known as Roman Catholic, while the eastern Churches have become known as Orthodox Churches.

Answer"Catholicism" was begun by Christ in order to be God's vehicle of salvation on earth. With the fulfilling of the Old Covenant, a New Covenant between God and man was struck. The Church was designed and instituted by Christ in order that this New Covenant would be proclaimed and administered not merely to a chosen people, but to the entire world. The Church's mission was thus to go forth in order to preach and baptise all nations. Unlike the Old Covenant religion, which was merged with the Jewish national and political identity, the Church began as an autonomous institution: it had global jurisdiction as given by Christ, however, it was not practically recognized by any major political, social or national body.

This situation changed in the fourth century. Attempts to become a visible institution were met with resistance in many areas. For those early centuries in many places, the Christian Church had no property; sporadic Roman persecutions dictated that Christian properties were forfeit to the state. Even when these persecutions subsided and tolerance was observed, the seized property was never restored. When Constantine rose to power he not only made an edict of toleration but became a patron of the Church - the other manifestations of Christianity that the Church considered illegitimate and which It were not supported and were actively suppressed by the state if they attempted to establish themselves.

The term "Catholic Church" is actually a misnomer and has not been used regularly in speech until recent times. The term "Catholic" is mainly applied in English countries, a result of Anglicans who promoted the "branch theory" of the Church.

The Church has at no time used the term "Catholic Church" in any of its official documents to identify itself. The Church has always called itself simply "the Church" and does not subscribe to the appellations modern scholars have been increasingly using in an attempt to slot it. Even "Catholics" and "Orthodox" officially consider each other of the Church, with the only distinguishing feature being that they consider the jurisdictional allegiance of the other to keep them suspended in schism, but certainly not of a different Church.

In modern times there is widespread confusion regarding what is the authentic Christian identity. Out of practical necessity Christians of the Church have begun to simply refer to themselves as Catholics, thus bowing to the modern understanding of the situation. The use of the term erodes the meaning of belonging to the Church, not only because of its dubious origins in Anglican circles but also because it is vehemently used to suggest the Roman Catholic Church is just another "Christian denomination"- not the institution that is identical with the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church of the creed.

Another Answer: The term "Catholic" was applied to mean the church from the earliest time. The first time we have the term in combination "Catholic Church" was by St. Ignatius in his letter to the Smyrneans in the year 110 A.D. The Catholic church has always been in Rome, St. Peter's Basilica is built over St. Peter's tomb, and he was the first Pope, appointed by Jesus, Himself, to be the foundation of the church. In modern times, the term "Roman Catholic Church" is used in two different senses, one is to point to the Latin rite of the Catholic Church, the other is to differentiate it from Protestant churches who broke away from the one, holy, catholic Church (as it is termed the Nicene and Apostle's creeds from earliest times).

Catholic AnswerCatholicism started because Our Blessed Lord wanted to be with His people until the end of the world, thus He established the Catholic Church ("His" Church) which is His Mystical Body (Acts 9:1-5; 1 Cor 12:12-14), whose Vicar is Peter and his successors (St. Matthew 16:17-19) and is guided by the Holy Spirit (St. John 16:13; Acts 2:1-4) and is until the end of the world (St. Matt 28:20).

It is just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, it was formed by God for the intention of presenting the saving message and the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Blessed Lord to all peoples throughout time and all over the world.

How? Well simply, Jesus started it "On the night He was betrayed He took bread and gave thanks He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said

'take this all of you and eat it for this is my body which will be shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me' etc .......................... And so He started it and told His disciples to go out and proclaim the good news!

Roman Catholic AnswerThere are several ways of looking at this, Our Blessed Lord in St. Matthew 16:17-19 told St. Peter that He would build His Church on him. The Church was then born from the side of Our Blessed Lord when He hung dead on the cross and a soldier pierced His side with a lance. Later it was confirmed by the Holy Spirit and shown to the world at the feast of Pentecost fifty days later, thus, Pentecost is considered the "birthday" of the Church.

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ to preach His message (the Good News) to all nations, and to baptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, bringing them into His church and offering them eternal salvation. In other words it was founded to bring God's love to people and those people to God.

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus in 33 AD. when Jesus said to Peter "you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church.

It wasn't, the Catholic faith emanated from God from the beginning of time, and was established on earth definitively from the side of Jesus Christ on the cross outside of Jerusalem when He side was pierced by a spear, around 33 A.D.. Then it was shown to the world at Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit, fifty-three days later. The Church thus is not "created" but, being the Mystical Body of Our Blessed Lord is part of Him.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

766 The Church is born primarily of Christ's total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. "The origin and growth of the church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the 'wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.'" Sacrosanctum concilium 5) As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam's side, so the church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross. (Cf. St. Ambrose, In Luc. 2, 85-89: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855} 15, 1666-1668)

767 "When the work which the Father gave the Son to do on earth was accomplished, the Holy Spirit was sent on the day of Pentecost in order that he might continually sanctify the Church." (Lumen gentium 4; cf. Jn 17:4) The "the Church was openly displayed to the crowds and the spread of the gospel among the nations, through preaching, was begun." (Ad gentes 4) As the "convocation" of all men for salvation, the Church in her very nature is missionary, sent by Christ to all the nations to make disciples of them. (Cf. Mt 28:19-20; Ad gentes 2; 5-6)

The Catholic religion was created in an effort to express what were considered by the founders of Catholicism to be profound and essential truths that the human race needed to know, in order to be able to fulfill their responsibilities toward God and toward their fellow humans.

.

Answer

Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, founded the Catholic Church, which is His Body (read Acts 9:1-5 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-14) in order to save all men, to bring Himself to them, and men to God, most especially to give grace to all men through the sacraments.
