Because the South didn't have the factories, munitions, clothing for northern temperatures, shoes to use in snow and freezing temperatures, and a means to obtain food sufficient for fighting. The South did have cotton and slaves, but those were not adequate to obtain funds for war. The South did have military leadership that was superior in knowledge, abilities, logistics, horsemanship, strategies, knowledge of rural southern areas, and outstanding courage.

Due to these outstanding leaders and their expertise and determination, it took the union four years (1861-1865) to beat the Confederacy. and leader of southern troops General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appamattox Courthouse, Virginia in 1865.

The economy of the Confederate states was in ruin at the end of the War Between the States because although it was possible to sell some of its cotton to England, there was no cash to purchase articles of war, and the South had its plantations and land, but no liquid assets nor other necessary financial means. Most of the southern landowners ran their plantations and overlooked their cotton fields, but had no outside jobs nor businesses. That is why the economy of the Confederacy was as devastated at the end of the war as its men and families were. Brother fought against brother, and this War between the States was the bloodiest ever fought by America.

How might the banning of slavery have affected the souths economy?

It forced the cotton plantation owners (the South's biggest industry and export) to pay their (from now on) employees and allow them to leave if they wanted to. The South's economy was however most affected by the Civil War that had completely stopped the South's cotton export. At the end of the war the Southern States found that India and Egypt had in the meantime largely taken over the cotton market. The banning of slavery and the resulting rising of the cost of labor thus mainly added to the many economic problems the South faced as a result of the Civil War.
