The use by the Confederacy actually was better used than the North's larger system due to the better tactics employed by the South with railways.Although the Union had twice as many miles of railways than the Confederacy, it was the smaller railways of the South that actually were initially put to better tactical use. The South began using its railways to the better advantage than the North by quickly transporting its troops on trains from one confrontation to another. The first battle of Bull Run was a Confederate victory because of the speed used by Confederate Generals Johnson and Jackson to transport troops from the Shenandoah Valley via rail to Bull Run.Even as late as 1863, the Confederate victory at the Battle of Chickamauga, Southern troops were sent quickly as reinforcements to that battle. It's clear that the South made better and more efficient use of its smaller railway system than the North did.

For most long-distance passenger trains, the following system is now followed. A train number has 4 digits. The first digit indicates the region or zonal railway, as indicated below: 0 is for Konkan Railway 1 is for CR (Centarl Railway) 2 is for superfasts and Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains regardless of zones. 3 is for ER (Eastern Railway) 4 is for NR (Northern Railways) 5 is shared by NER and NFR (North Eastern Railway and North Frontier Railways) 6 is for SR (Southern Railways) 7 is for SCR (South Central Railways) 8 is for SER (South Eastren Railways 9 is for WR (Western Railways) If the first digit is not '2', then the second digit indicates the division of the home shed or station that "owns" the rakes used for the train (the primary maintenance depot). This is usually in the same division as that of one of the end-points of the train's run, but sometimes it isn't. Usually, '0' for the second digit indicates the headquarters of the zone. A listing of the 2-digit prefixes and the corresponding home stations is given below. The "other" notation indicates the prefix is used for other home sheds in the zone that don't have their own prefixes. Prefixes not listed are not known to be in use.
