The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by a 35-year-amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. It was not written to be a national anthem or patriotic song, but to merely describe the scene of a battle.
In 1814, after witnessing a bombing by British Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay, Francis Scott Key was inspired by the visual display of the action and the great courage of the men involved to write The Star Spangled Banner. Though it first existed only in the form of a four-stanza poem, it was later set to music. The combination of both the popular tune and lyrics caused the song to be widely known, enough so that it was eventually adopted as the national anthem.
Francis Scott Key was on an enemy boat and wanted to write a poem about whether the American flag was still flying. Then he wrote the 2 other verses saying that the flag was still flying and he was celebrating
