It allowed for the first time in history a steady, reasonably reliable, prime mover for factory equipment and transport, with few geographical limitations on location. Prior to that the nearest steady power available was from water falling onto a water-wheel, for which of course you need a reliable river, so limiting its use to fixed plant alongside such rivers.
