The Jewish people in and around the city of Jerusalem were a constant problem for the Roman Empire due to numerous revolts by the population. One method the ancient Romans used, as example of Carthage shows, was to simply "wipe out" and/or destroy their enemies. By 70 AD Rome decided to end Jewish resistance to Rome by leveling the entire city of Jerusalem, the main city or capitol as it can be called. This included all temples.Thus Roman legions were sent to destroy the city and enslave or disperse the Jewish people out of the Holy Land. Masada was the last fortress of resistance and the Roman general Silva lay siege to Masada. Finally as the 900 or so Jewish defenders saw the end coming, they committed a mass suicide. Silva, by way of a mountain of earth was able to reach Masada but found everyone dead.

Actually, they didn't. As long as the conquered areas paid taxes and avoided revolt, the Romans didn't particularly care.

It was the king of Judea, Agrippas the *second, who incited Vespasian to attack. This Agrippas, though nominally Jewish, was a stranger to his own people. He had been incited by one of his clique, Compsus Bar Compsus (the Bar Kamtza mentioned in the Talmud). This Compsus had been mistakenly invited to a celebration at which the Sages were all present. The Jewish sages, as leaders of their people, were subject to intermittent surveillance; and a routine celebration such as a Bris would be a useful opportunity to discuss any urgent communal matters, without suspicion. But when Compsus showed up, the Sages felt muzzled; and the person who was paying for the celebration asked Compsus to leave...too forcefully. The Sages were sick of the Sadducees and others constantly interfering in public affairs, and didn't protest when Compsus was ejected from the premises. He promptly went and badmouthed his own people, setting in motion the events that resulted in the Second Destruction.
