The French, English, and Spaniards all wanted land and natural resources. Oeaan coasts, harbors, lakes , and rivers were added bonuses! Spain pretty much stayed South at the Gulf of Mexico and Florida, and later, California. This left the British, the French, and the Indians to fought over land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ohio Territory-- a big chunk of land. The British had already betrayed Native Americans; the British broke many treaties, including to stay East of the Appalachian Mountains. So the French had the upper hand with Indians because the French seemed more trustworthy. The French established its power from Canada down through the Great Lakes and the large area of the Ohio Territory.
The British had to ask George Washington to go into Ohio to defeat the French, who were aided by Native American Indians. But the French and the Indians defeated young George. They allowed George to take his men back across the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. George vowed he would never fight again! However, this early defeat helped Washington to become a better leader of troops.
Note: The fight was not just over land. If a country owned the land, it owned the rivers and lakes in that area. It owned resources: water, timber, wild berries, plants (including ones used as medicine), along with wild fowl, fish and beavers, and all mammals like foxes, lions, bears, etc. Even snakes had value.
With ownership over waterways, one country could control shipment of goods to the Gulf and to the Atlantic. Everything was shipped back to the Motherland-- if you were in control.
The more land and water you controlled, the more dominance that country had in the New World.
