Thomas More was executed because he refused to take the oath required by the Act of Supremacy of 1534.

King Henry had Sir Thomas More executed because Sir Thomas More believed in the Catholic Faith and would not convert to the Anglican Faith. Because he died for his faith Sir Thomas More is now a Martyr and Saint in the Catholic Church.

The Act of Supremacy of 1534 declared that the king was " taken, accepted, and reputed the only supreme head of the church of England." And Thomas More , opposed the king's actions, and therefore was beheaded.

Sir Thomas More was beheaded because he did not support the Act of Succession. More viewed Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII's wife at that time) as the rightful queen, but he refused the make an oath of supremacy because the that would mean acknowledging the king as the head of the church, something which the devoutly Catholic More found impossible to swallow.

In the time before his downfall, Thomas Cromwell was highly favoured by King Henry VIII. Thus, Cromwell had many political enemies who sought to topple him. On 10 June 1540, Cromwell was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London under a list of charges including: treason, heresy, corruption, and plotting to marry Henry's daughter, Mary Tudor.

Under these charges, Cromwell was sentenced to death without a trial and was beheaded on 28 July 1540.

Sir Thomas More (1478 - 1535), the ill-fated Lord Chancellor of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) was basically sentenced to death for refusing to agree to the divorce of the king from Queen Catherine of Aragon, and the king's subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn. Because he refused to agree to the parliamentary Act Of Succession, he was doomed, and found guilty of treason. Although it was the false witness of Sir Richard Rich, Solicitor General, that sealed his fate.

Sir Thomas was executed on the 6 July 1535 by beheading, on Tower Hill, the Tower of London.
