The British were really into smoking at the time. Don't quote me on this, but I'm going to hazard a guess that the rest of Europe liked it too. Therefore, good tobacco grown in the States would have sold for lots of money.

It was very important to Virginia because they were able to easily export and trade it. Then they gained wealth. Virginians usually bartered with tobacco too.
