Veteran's Day, which is November 11, is observed in the United States and Canada as well as other countries. It originated in 1918 (then called Armistice Day), at the end of World War 1, and was to honor the veterans of the armed services and in commemoration of the armistice that ended World War 1. It was renamed from Armistice Day and given the added significance of honoring veterans in 1954.
Not just to honor veterans but to mark and celebrate the cessation of hostilities between the belligerents during WW1 (Armistice Day) which was often commemorated by wearing a red poppy .
"In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
To respect the people that survived the war and the people that didn`t survive it.
It is named that in honer of the Veterans that fought in the war. It is a day to honor them.
