Wegener was ignored for so long because no scientists believed him about his theory of continental drift. No scientists believed him because he couldn't explain how the continents had moved until the time of Harry Hess or J. Tuzo Wilson.

There are several reasons:

  1. Continental drift was quite a radical proposal.
  2. Wegener did not have a plausible explanation for how continental drift might work
  3. Wegener was a meteorologist, not a geologist, and so was seen as an outsider by much of the geologic community.
