Buddhism was followed in India for many centuries. The reasons it was lost as a practice are widely debated, not well understood. Two possible factors were:

(1) that the Buddha was reinvented as an avatar of Vishnu, which diluted and distorted his teachings until the meaning was lost in the area

(2) When Muslim populations settled in India, some targeted Buddhist centers for destruction.

It's very likely that these are only part of the reasons.
