A:A rough and ready means of distributing resources in Arabia was the ghazu, or raid. Raiding parties would attack a caravan or contingent from a rival tribe and carry off booty and livestock, taking care not to kill people, as this would mean a vendetta. It was forbidden to raid a tribe that had become an ally, or a weaker tribe that was a client of an ally. This meant that Muhammad ought not have been a threat to the merchants around Mecca.

After Muhammad and his supporters moved to Medina they began to conduct ghazu against the rich Meccan caravans, in order to support themselves. Since they were attacking their own tribe, this was a serious breach of protocol. In March 624, Muhammad led a large band to the coast to intercept the largest Meccan caravan of the year. The Quraysh sent an army to defend the caravan, but the Muslims inflicted a stunning defeat at the well of Badr. This impressed the Bedouin tribes, some of whom enjoyed seeing the mighty Quraysh tribe brought low. These military successes led to the rapid spread of Islam in south-western Arabia, at the same time as attacks on Meccan caravans increased.
