This could be due to several reasons.
First, the Shakers were more insular and kept to themselves, while Mormons have a very extensive evangelism effort and proliferate into their communities. Since Mormons were out and about, people had a higher chance of being annoyed by them.
Second, the Shakers were, for the most part, a smaller group. The Mormons are ever-expanding. People felt more threatened by the Mormons and in some cases were worried that Mormons would take over their cities and towns. There were more Mormons, so there were more to persecute.
Third, the Shakers have died out, but Mormonism lives on. Nobody persecutes Shakers anymore because they don't exist, but Mormons are still persecuted by many to this day.

How is the Shakers different from the Mormons?

Shakers Shake More!! Mormons Believe In The Book Of Mormon Published In 1830 ByJoesph Smith, They Believe That A Prophet Named Mormon Wrote A Book Of Scripture Called The Book Of Mormon. Mormons Are Mainly From The USA. The Shakers originated in England, Manchester in 1747 in the home of Jane and James Wardley. They developed from the religious group called the shakers which developed in the 17th century. Both groups believed that everybody could find God within him or herself, rather than through clergy or rituals, but the Shakers tended to be more emotional and demonstrative in their worship. Shakers also believed that their lives should be dedicated to pursuing perfection and continuously confessing their sins and attempting to stop sinning.

How do you tell salt and pepper shakers apart?

Pepper shakers will have more holes than salt (it's logical: it's worse to oversalt a dish).

Is there more Mormons in Arizona than Utah?

There are most definitely more members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) living in Utah than in Arizona. Membership records released by the Church show that as of January 2013, there were 1,951,937 Mormons living in Utah and 404,261 Mormons living in Arizona... meaning that Utah has four times more Mormons than Arizona does.

Do people hate Mormons?

Most people do not hate Mormons, the Osmonds are very popular Mormons singing family. The State of Utah hosted the Winter Olympics a few years ago. Some people do dislike the idea of a man having more than one wife at a time (or the idea of a woman having more than one husband at a time), and some Mormons men have more than one wife. On the whole Mormons who have one spouse at a time are very popular.

In 1847 why did Mormons emigrate to the area betwen the rocky mountains and the great salt lake?

In a country that has one of it's rights as 'Freedom of Religion'. In 1847 the Mormons were not provided that right. The federal government under President Polk refused to protect the Mormons and Mobs & terrorist's burned their homes and forced them to flee for their lives from the state of Illinois. Just because the Mormons had some different religious beliefs than their Christian neighbors.

What towns in Utah are more Christian than Mormon?

First of all, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are Christian, they are just not Protestant or Catholic Christians. No towns in Utah have more 'Christians' (Protestants and Catholics) than Mormons. There are towns that have more non-Mormons than Mormons, but not all of the non-Mormons are Christian. Many of them are not religious or belong to other faiths such as Islam, Judaism, or Buddhism.

Do Mormons get their own planet if they have 9 or more kids?

Mormons do not believe that quantity of kids has anything to do with salvation. Mormons have more than the average amount of kids because they believe in family. Mormons believe salvation consists of receving all that God has. The idea of Mormons receiving their own planet is a bit of saracsm that is pushed by those who do not like the church.

Why were the Mormons prosecuted?

"Prosecuted" means to take legal action against someone. I'm assuming you mean "persecuted". Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") have been persecuted since their beginnings in 1830. There are many different reasons why they might be persecuted. Often in the early days of the church they were persecuted because people worried that the Mormons were going to take over their land or government. Many also thought they were crazy for believing Joseph Smith. They thought that anyone who belived a man who said he had seen God and angels must be insane. Then as well as today, many of the people who oppose the church are actually people who have left the church. They are trying to retaliate because of something they were offended by or because of a negative experience they had. Today, members of the church are persecuted for being different than mainstream Christianity. Many do not consider them Christian for various reasons, and try to point out their many reasons that Mormons are not Christian. Some consider them a 'cult' and think that they are brainwashed. Church members are often mocked for their high moral standards, including their stance against gay marriage. If you'd like to learn more about the church or meet and worship with church members in your area, you can see the links below under "Related Links."

What practice caused Mormons to be persecuted in the late 1850s?

There were many reasons why Mormons were persecuted in the 1800's. Essentially, it is because they were seen as a threat to the typical American Christian way of life at the time as well as because of their political ideas. Here are some reasons Mormons were persecuted in the 1800's:-They were anti-slavery. This was especially bad for them in pro-slavery Missouri, where they were ordered out on extermination order from the Governor who made it legal to kill a Mormon.-They believed in a "new" religion. While Mormons believe their religion is a restoration of ancient Christianity, traditional Christians of the time did not like that Mormons differed from Christian norms. They had a modern prophet, additional books of scripture, and other beliefs that simply didn't exist in mainstream Christianity.-They believed in the concept of 'gathering'. Mormons were encouraged to gather and live near each other, which resulted in them nearly overtaking small towns. (Imagine the population of your town doubling when a bunch of outsiders from a weird religion move in all at once!) Residents fought back in a struggle to maintain their identity. Some made it illegal for Mormons to vote or hold public office to preserve their preferred political climate.-In some cases, the Mormons believed the land they were in was a "promised land" given to them by God, and could treat those who already lived there unkindly.-Often, Mormons would favor going to stores that were owned by other Mormons rather than using goods and services offered by non-Mormons.-Mormons had some practices viewed as ungodly or immoral by outsiders. This included the practice of polygamy (having more than one wife) which Mormons believed was in accordance with a Biblical restoration. Also some Mormon communities lived a communal lifestyle "having all things in common" as the New Testament describes. Mormons were also known for enjoying music and dancing, even in worship, which was forbidden by many Christians at the time.-Mormons were also seen as being very liberal. Once in Utah, Mormon women were allowed to vote, they were encouraged to have jobs, were given a voice and responsibility in the congregation, were sent to universities, established hospitals and schools, and even wore short skirts with pants underneath! They assisted and worked with the native tribes, had a good rapport with most racial minorities, and encouraged their people to gain both secular and religious education.-Finally, some people who persecuted Mormons were simply misguided or uninformed. Rumors were rampant in newspapers of the day, saying that Mormons were secretly devils and had horns to prove it, Mormons were money diggers, that they had satanic practices, they operated a secret mafia that killed defectors, that they kidnapped young girls and threw them off the pinnacle of the temple if they refused to marry. All these things were, of course, untrue, but the people had no way to know that.
