Missionaries have always been sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) to spread the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Their purpose is not only to encourage others to come unto Christ, but also to explain their faith and to clarify any false information people might have. In addition to preaching and proselyting, they also provide service and humanitarian work in the communities they are sent to.
There have been over one million missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since it's beginning in 1830, and each of these has been given the same commission, to "go ye into all the world and preach the gospel unto every creature" (Mark 16:15) and to act as a representative of Jesus Christ.
This depends entirely on the type of missionaries they are and what organization sent them. Many missionaries are church-planting or proselyting, meaning that they were sent by a church or ministry in order to gain converts to that faith organization. These missionaries will teach the doctrines and practices of their sending organization while supporting or building a local congregation. Other missionaries are service missionaries and focus their teaching and service in areas such as health care, education, farming, or building. Many missionaries do both service and preaching. As an example of what some missionaries might teach, look at the following links:Living Word Missions Missionary ManualHope Mission Trips Evangelism ResourcesUnited Methodist Missionary Training ManualEvangelical Covenant Church Missions ManualPreach my Gospel: Manual for Mormon MissionariesManual for Episcopal Youth Missions
Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The "Mormon" church) do have the physical ability to lie, as they are human, but they are not supposed to lie. If their leaders find out they have lied they can be sent home.
Missions refer to the goals or purposes of a religious group or organization, while missionaries are individuals who are sent out to spread the message or work towards the goals of those missions. Missionaries are typically the ones actively engaging in the mission work on the ground.
a mission is a group of missionaries that are sent to places to teach people to believe in their religious faith. Example: In newFrance missionaries were sent to go to a presidio and teach the people there of their religion. Also in new Spain the king sent missionaries to convert native Americans and Spain people to the catholic religion
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) did not come from Europe. It began in 1830 in upstate New York, USA. Mormonism first reached Europe in 1837, when a group of missionaries was sent to Great Britain. In fact, the oldest continuous Mormon congregation in the entire world is located in Preston, England. It was established in 1837 shortly after the missionaries arrived there. Missionaries were sent to other European nations shortly afterward, and Mormon converts became quite plentiful in Germany, Holland, and Scandinavia.
The first missionaries to Denmark arrived in Copenhagen in June 1850. The first Danish convert was baptized in August, and the first congregation of 15 people was organized by October.
South Korea previously sent more Christian missionaries per congregation than any other country. It is currently sends the third highest number of missionaries, with the United States and India coming in second. It is second highest in sending missionaries to foreign lands, second only to the United States. (see "The Future of the Global Church" by Patrick Johnstone, pgs. 229, 233)
Most tribes got along with the Mormon pioneers pretty well, but not all. For a time, there were even missionaries sent out just to teach the Native American people because they got along so well.
At least 8 missions have German Speaking missionaries. They are Germany Berlin, Germany Frankfurt, Germany Munich, Germany Hamburg, Germany Leipzig, Switzerland Geneva, Switzerland Zurich, and Utah Salt Lake City Temple Square. German Speaking missionaries may also be sent to large cities with high German/Austrian/Swiss populations.
Although the American Board for Foreign Missions sent the first American missionaries to the PNW (the Whitmans and the Spaldings), the first missionary to the PNW was in fact Spokane Garry, who left eastern Washington in 1825 for the Red River Mission in Canada and returned in 1829 as a converted Christian who independently taught his tribe from the Bible.
To date there have been 282 manned missions sent into space and more than 1000 unmanned missions.
'Missionaries' is the plural of missionary. A missionary is a person who is sent on a mission, especially one sent to do religious or charitable work in a territory or foreign country.
