All ethnic groups have been and continue to be slaves. If you are referring to the American slave trade, it actually began as white slavery. Look at the history of Georgia Colony. The reason white slavery did not continue as a whole in the Americas is that black Africans fared better with some of the diseases that affected agricultural workers in the areas slaves were used. Primary among these was malaria.
Historically, the transatlantic slave trade primarily targeted Africans for enslavement due to economic factors, existing power dynamics, and racial prejudices. Europeans justified the enslavement of Africans by dehumanizing them based on their physical appearance and cultural differences, exploiting these racial ideas to support the institution of slavery. This resulted in the systematic oppression and exploitation of African individuals and communities.
Whites may have feared black slaves due to the perceived threat of rebellion or uprising, as well as fears of loss of control and power. Whites also may have viewed black slaves as different or inferior, leading to feelings of superiority and the need to maintain dominance through fear.
Blacks did not like being slaves; slavery was a brutal and dehumanizing system that deprived individuals of their basic rights and freedoms. Enslaved people endured unspeakable suffering, exploitation, and violence at the hands of their oppressors. It is important to recognize the resilience and resistance of enslaved individuals rather than perpetuating myths that suggest they were complicit in their own oppression.
Around 75% of southern whites owned fewer than five slaves. The majority of white southerners owned no slaves at all, as slaves were primarily held by a small percentage of wealthy plantation owners.
Poor whites often saw slaves as competition for jobs and viewed them as undermining their economic prospects. This sometimes led to animosity between the two groups, as poor whites felt threatened by the availability of cheap labor provided by slaves. Additionally, the racial hierarchy of the time often made poor whites feel superior to slaves, despite their shared economic struggles.
Plantation slaves typically lived and worked in rural areas, subject to harsher conditions and more limited freedoms compared to city slaves who often had more opportunities for autonomy and financial independence. Free blacks still faced discrimination and limited rights, but had more control over their own lives compared to slaves.
