Collies were bred to herd sheep for farmers because they found it really hard. Border collies were originally bred in Scotland and England. So they were bred to help herd sheep and sometimes cattle but usually just sheep as they are smaller and sheep will usually run away but a cow might chase and hurt the dog.
Border Collies got their name because they were originally bred & used on the border between Scotland and the UK, so the people there decided to call them Border Collies. :)
Collies is the plural of Collie which is a type of dog. A Collie is a sheepdog with long hair and has traditionally bred in Scotland. These are extremely intelligent dogs.
They are not bred with any dog they are "Native dogs"
Border Collies were bred to herd sheep and guard flocks from predators.
That is what they were bred to do.
NO! Border collies have endless energy and must be constantly mentally and physically stimulated. They are best, of course, where they can herd sheep, as they were bred to do.
Yes. Years ago, when they were being developed as a breed, they were basicly selectivly bred mixes. Now they have become a true breed registered with many Kennel Clubs and fairly popular pets.
depends... but due to well being bred for herding they will sometimes nip their owners.
I think its because they were bred to be sheep dogs and so they are designed for that stuff.
The Border Collie is a breed of working and herding dog developed in the English-Scottish border region. They were developed from the Landrace Collies of the British Isles.
Border Collies have excellent memory. They were bred and rebred so that their memory span can stretch and remember things like the looks of their owner, when sheep are in trouble or distressed or remember even a path through a maze.
Most Border Collies do make outstanding sheep dogs, if they are trained properly. They do so because it's in their instinct from their ancestors on the border between Scotland and England. :)
