They were not. Both the Orthodox and Roman Catholics accept the decision of the Seventh Ecumenical Council which declared that the veneration of icons is essential in the Christian Church. The split (or schism) was due to other causes, such as Papal claims of supremacy, and the change to the Creed.
The East–West Schism, commonly referred to as the Great Schism of 1054, is the break of communion between what are now the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches, which began in the 11th century and continues.

The Byzantine army supported the emperor. There was a schism between the Catholic and Orthodox churches in the eleventh century. From that time onward the emperor was seen as the head of the Orthodox church, and the Pope as the head of the Catholic church.
The split between the Eastern Orthodox and the western Catholic Churches was caused by a number of different factors. Namely, neither side could decide on the Pope's role in the church, or the scope of his authority.
The great schism resulted from a conflict between the Catholic and the Orthodox Churches.
A rift developed between Latin Christianity and Greek Christianity which then led to the schism between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. The conflict between the two led to mutual distrust . The Orthodox Church was the church of the Byzantine Empire.
Some byzantine churches are Orthodox. And some Orthodox churches are byzantine. Other than that, there's no difference. There are Roman Catholic churches which follow the byzantine form of worship, since they ceased being Orthodox in the 1400-1700s but retained their liturgical practices. And there are plenty of Orthodox parishes which have never followed byzantine norms for worship (Russian, for example, or in some places, Western Rite, especially when an entire Anglican or Roman Catholic congregation has become Orthodox). If you hear someone generically refer to "THE Byzantine Church," they are probably referring generically to the Orthodox Church, giving credence to its roots in Greek thought, culture, and language.
The Orthodox Church began as the first Christian Church (alongside the Roman Catholic Church--this was obviously before the schism which occurred in 1054 between the two churches) at Pentecost in Jerusalem. Short answer: Jerusalem
First, there is more in common betwen the different Christian churches and communities there is different, especially in the most important things, like our faith in God as Trinity, faith in Christ, the Resurrection, baptism, the importance of the Bible, etc.It is also important to remember that there are many different Protestant churches and communities, each is different from the other, and so each is different from the Catholic Church and Orthodox Church in different ways.Briefly, though, differences include:The Catholic Church is a communion of 23 autonomous churches, present throughout the world, all of which are in communion with the pope (the bishop of Rome). The Orthodox Church is a communion of 25-30 autocephalous and autonomous churches in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch (the bishop of Constantinople). There are also the six Oriental Orthodox Churches which are in commmunion with the pope of Alexandria, and the Assyrian Church in communion with the Patriarch of Selucia-Ctesiphon.There is no Protestant Church, per se, only a variety of protestant churches, and each can differ as much from the other as from either of the above two groups. The main thing they have in common is that they are not Catholic (or Orthodox).Read more: Differences_between_Catholic_and_protestants
