New South Wales was the first place in Australia to be colonised. The reason it was chosen was that James Cook and his botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, recommended botany Bay as suitable for settlement, particularly a convict settlement. The site was far enough away that there was little likelihood that pardoned convicts would return to England, and there was nowhere for the convicts to escape to. meanwhile, but sending people to New South Wales, England reinforced its claim on the continent and expanded its empire.
While Botany Bay itself was not settled because Captain Arthur Phillip, who led the First Fleet of convicts, deemed it usuitable for several reasons, Port Jackson became the site of the only colony in Australia. It was logical to send convicts there, and for settlers to arrive there, as it was the only known port in Australia for at least 16 years.
