Almost all settlements and even modern cities are located near water for the reasons cited above. It was the easiest and cheapest means of transport at the time and is still a major transportation method. Until the advent of railroad, most settlement patterns in the US were based on water routes.

Most Immigration was from the East - Europe, etc. So it would be expected that the first settlements would be established on the east coast of America. Later on there was more movement towards the west, usually on the promise of free land for anyone willing to go west and settle there.
