the motte and bailey was secure because they had the wooden fence around the whole castle and the motte was high on its hill, which made the enemies not able to climb. The bailey had a d shaped ditch which also made the enemies fall in and not be able to attack.

How did Normans built castles?

The Norman nobility needed to feel safe from Saxon attacks in a similar way to celebrities nowadays having CCTV and fences and other equipment to protect them from kidnapping. Castles were first made out of wood & earth. These were called motte & bailey castlesThen castles evolved and became stone structures, forts.

What each part of a motte and bailey castle and what they are used for?

The motte was a mound - earth and stone or if the Normans were lucky with the site, a natural hill. The bailey was the courtyard around the base of the motte. In the bailey were the stables, stores and workshops and basic living accommodation. On top of the motte was a small wooden (often later changed to stone stone once the earth mound had stabilized) keep or donjon. This was a two or three storey tower with its only entrance on the first floor. It provided a safe refuge in time of attack.

How and why did castles change over time?

Why 1Castles in medeval times changed from motte and bailey castles to concentric castles. They changed them because the motte and bailey castles (which were made out of wood) had lots of weaknesses: Sets on fire easilyRots quicklyIsn't very strongAlso, King William (William the conqueror) (the ruler in those times) built motte and bailey castles to stop any rebellians and would only take a few days to build.Concentric castles were made out of stone. Stone doesn't set on fire, doesn't rot and is very strong. They also didn't just change because of the weakness of the motte and bailey castles but because of the influence of change of culture, and warfare. This lead to them becoming more safe and easier to defend and attack.HowWhen King William (william the conqueror) wanted to replace the Motte and Bailey castles he knocked them down and replaced them with concentric castles. There are many more types of castles

Why were the mote and bailey castles not good enough?

because the wooden one would get burnt easily which also means that the attackers could attack easily aswell but the stone castle made it harder for them to attack and kept the others safe

When did square keep castles stop being built?

Dont have a Clue LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE !!!!!

Why were square stone castles built?

Stone keep castles were built because it wasn't going to burn or rot like Motte and Bailey castles would. Also, it would keep it the castle standing for a long amount of time.Because the Motte and Bailey castles would just burn the stone keep castles were a brilliant idea. They lasted longer, they were better defence though the only down side was that they took a lot longer to build. The wooden Motte and Bailey castles only took a week or two but the stone castles would take months.Square keep castle are quite strong castles, as for this they built lots of them for defence the stronger the castle the better defence because square castles have round towers in each corner the pressure spreads every where and not in one place so the castle does not collapse.

How do you attack motte and bailey castle?

There are 3 ways to attack any castle: Siege: you surround it and wait for the defenders to run out of food. Direct attack: Either by ramming the doorway or breaking a wall by artillery or undermining. Assault: A siege tower or scaling ladders over the wall. Or of course a combination of the above. But what a castle is, by and large, is a defensive fortification, its very design & location is there to make any attack as difficult as possible and keep its inhabitants safe from enemy attack. you can also defend a motte and bailey castle by staying on the high ground and rationing your food. people got very scared and frightened of these attacks and when that happened they killed themselves. And that's it.
