Due to the increasing popularity of the new religion "Christianity", Rome had no choice but to "go with the flow" and turn towards the new way of the people to remain in control and in favor of the people. Imperial Rome was a democratic state.

∙ 8y agoPagan temples were indeed appropriate as there were still many pagans in Rome even after Emperor Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of the empire and expected all his subjects to convert. However, the bishops led Christian mobs in smashing the temple statues, and began appropriating the temples for use as Christian churches. After 391, the public worship of the old gods became a capital offence, meaning that the pagans could no longer use their temples and could be executed for even looking at pagan statues destroyed by the Christians.
