Silk is very strong and resistant to tearing. Lightweight, silk is not a significant burden on aircraft, and can be carried, for example, on jumper's backs. It is resistant to moths, mildew and mold.
It is waterproof and also windproof it also helps make friction which also helps have a safe landing xx
Nylon is very strong and very light to carry. Parachutes are water resistant so when it rains you have a parachute to cover you.
They are both very strong but light fabrics.
Parachutes are made of silk, or nylon
Parachutes were originally made of silk, but now they are probably made of an artificial material like nylon.

Silk. Later nylon was used.
silk is no longer used for making parachutes. It was a good material before nylon came along, but no parachutes are made from silk anymore. Not for decades. <><><><> When it WAS used, it was because it was very light, extremely strong, was not bulky, and could be woven in a very tight weave.
Silk, up until the war. Japan controlled all the silk-making areas, so silk was unobtainable, for either parachutes or ladies hosiery. Both are made of the synthetic nylon today.
Parachutes are most commonly made from nylon, however they have, in the past, been made from silk and hemp.
because i said so 8-)
silk or synthetic plastic such as Silray also used in the sixties for model-airplane covering. ( wings, etc).
Silk is a natural fiber, secreted by silkworms to form their cocoons. Silk fabric is woven from the silk threads. The fabric is very soft, very slick, and very strong. It is used to make fine clothing- and at one time, it was used to make parachutes.
Parachutes were made of woven nylon fabric in WW2
