That was the early bunch...the early 60's men. They weren't caught up in the "factory assembly line" of men rotating to Vietnam. Those early 1950's and 1960's GIs were from the Elvis Presley, Ozzie and Harriet, and other "Happy Days" crowd...saving the world and all that. By the late 1960's the Rock and Roll GI's began to arrive in country...and they didn't really care...they just did their time and DEROS out (or ETS'd out).
