Alexander intended to introduce Greek culture to the Persian Empire when he took it over. The central focus of Greek culture was the city-state. So part of his Hellenisation programme was to establish Greek-style city-states in tribal areas. So he set about establishing them, founding over 70 cities.
He modestly named half of them Alexandria after himself. A notable Survivor today is Alexandria in Egypt.

Well, honey, back in the day, ol' Alexander the Great had a bit of an ego and decided to name a bunch of cities after himself. So, you've got Alexandria in Egypt, Virginia, and a whole bunch of other places. It's like he wanted to make sure everyone knew who was in charge, bless his heart.

Hubris. He was obsessed with leaving his legacy and being remembered across his empire. In times before people invented the idea of an afterlife, they could live on in people's memories - if people remembered them. Everyone remembered Achilles, even though he was a callous murderer, because the bards sang of him. So self-important people tried to be remembered. Alexander's naming of over 30 cities Alexandria after himself reflected this. He even named a city after his trusty horse Bucephalus to keep his name alive, and similarly favoured some of his generals.
All of them, so he could take over all of the Persian Empire.
