They weren't. They have no strategic value, unless they were used as airfields by the RAF. large building such as stately homes were often used as landmarks to find the main targets. Storment in northern Ireland was used by the Germans find the way to the shipyards in Belfast. Buckingham Palace was also bombed in ww2 but this only served the Propaganda war.
