because we were going to drop all the atomic bombs we could produce on japan as fast as we could produce them and get them to the field for delivery. the US had production plans, industrial facilities, and aircraft capable of producing a total of 23 atomic bombs and delivering them to japan before the end of 1945. only their surrender prevented more than the first 2 from being used(the 3rd had already been built and shipped to San Francisco prior to the announcement of their intension to surrender and would have been used in late august).

  1. august: 3 (only 2 used)
  2. september: 3
  3. october: 3
  4. november: 7 (change to composite uranium/plutonium core allowing increase in production)
  5. december: 7

note: problems with the hanford production reactors (see: wigner effect) caused reductions in plutonium production around late october, so this schedule probably could not have been maintained exactly as planned. but still many more atomic bombs than just the 2 used could have been dropped on japan had they continued fighting.

Hundreds of thousands of bombs were dropped on Japan. Only two atomic bombs were dropped. As in all warfare, bombing is designed to destroy the enemy's ability to resist.
