The Fenians were Irish Americans with the goal of taking Canada from Britain. They were violent (assassinated one of our top politicians) well trained and armed after the American Civil war and had attempted to take over Canada by invasion.

The greatest threat from their success would be the American government response If the Fenians had managed to get the upper hand in upper Canada the Americans might take advantage of the situation by offering military support. Britain would almost certainly withdraw not wanting to risk an all out war to save their remaining colonies. Canadians would become Americans just as the French had become British in the 1700's.

That didn't happen. Canada was able to handle the Fenian invasion and the Americans actually tracked them down when they retreated to the USA.

Why is people afraid of the fenians?

People may fear the Fenians due to their association with nationalism and the desire for Irish independence from British rule during the 19th century. The Fenians, particularly the Irish Republican Brotherhood, were known for their willingness to use violence and revolutionary tactics, which contributed to a perception of them as a radical threat. Additionally, the sectarian tensions and historical conflicts between Irish Catholics and British Protestants fueled fears and misunderstandings about their motivations and goals.
