AnswerAt the end of the First Jewish War, in 70 CE, the Romans had finally overrun Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple. They now began a mopping-up operation to destroy all other centres of resistance in Judea, including Qumran. The Essenes hid their sacred texts and the rules of their community, fearing that the Romans would destroy the documents if they were found. They hoped to return to Qumran after the peace returned.

Was Jesus in the Dead Sea Scrolls?

A:The Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden in a series of caves near Qumran in approximately 70 CE and include material written down over a period of around two hundred years, including copies of earlier Hebrew scriptures. There is no mention of Jesus but there is a mention of a Teacher of Righteousness from the second century BCE, who some have seen as the real Jesus.

What is the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls for Christians?

The Dead Sea Scrolls provided the oldest available manuscripts of the Hebrew scriptures written in their original languages, and allowed scholars to check the accuracy of the Masoretic texts used by Judaism, as well as the accuracy of the Septuagint, an early Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures. Whenever the Septuagint seemed to favour Christianity, when compared with the Masoretic texts, Christian apologists had accused the Jews of altering their own holy scriptures to disadvantage Christianity. The Dead Sea Scrolls showed that the Masoretic texts were little changed from the scriptures in use early in the first century CE. This proved that most discrepancies between the Septuagint and the Masoretic texts were the result of mistranslations by the authors of the Septuagint.

Does the Dead Sea Scroll confirm an established movement called Christianity?

The Dead Sea scrolls were written by a sect of Christianity called the Gnostic's a mystical branch of Christians. This sect died out and is not represented in Christianity today. The best example I can give today would be Christian Scientists. However, to answer your question, Christianity is well established and documented by many historians dating to the 1st century.

Did the Dead Sea Scrolls influence John the Baptist?

The Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden in caves overlooking the Dead Sea around 70 CE, at the end of the First Roman-Jewish War. They included many standard Jewish scriptures, as well as a number of scolls concerned with rules and practices of the community that hid them. Since John the Baptist was executed in 36 CE, long before the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden, he was of course not influenced by these scrolls themselves. Whether he was influenced by the scrolls before they became "Dead Sea Scrolls", or by other copies of them, depends on whether John was a member of the community that hid them. This possibility continues to be debated.

What books of the Bible are from the Dead Sea Scrolls?

None of the Bible is based on the Dead Sea Scrolls as originals. The Scrolls consisted of copies of many of the existing books of the Old Testament, plus a number of secular documents containing rules and administrative procedures of the community at the Dead Sea. The principal value of the Scrolls is that they enable scholars to see what the books of the Old Testament actually said up to the time in the first century when they were hidden, and what changes have occurred since that time.
