SAM's (Surface to Air Missiles), known by US Airmen as the "Flying Telephone Poles" were part of North Vietnam's air defensive network. They worked in conjunction with North Vietnam's Air Force; NVAF MIG-17, MIG-19, and MIG-21 jet intercepters would often dog-fight US jets, then lure them over the SAM sites...breaking contact to let the SAM's deal with the US aircraft. Didn't always work, sometimes the SAMs took out (shot down) some of their own MIGs (friendly fire).
