Determination. Many years ago, there was a wounded exhausted NVA POW. An allied soldier asked this POW, "whose going to win this war?" Without a blink of an eye, the NVA replied, "I am!"
Wounded, exhausted, near death, and he believed that "HE" would win the war!?
Guess what? He did.
The Vietcong was not necessarily effective, in fact knowing that they could not face the US directly on in battle, they used guerrilla tactics to attack. They used the environment that they so well knew, hide in plain sight tactics, unexploded ordnance, and sabotage to successfully uproot the US. They knew they wouldn't win. So they resolved to make the war so costly that the US would be forced to back out, and they did exactly that.

This is false. The Tet offensive resulted in temporary gains for the Viet Cong but ended up with the destruction of the Viet Cong as a fighting force. The real winners were the North Vietnamese, who planned the attacks and carried out some of the more successful operations including the daring takeover of the US Embassy building. After the Tet offensive, the Viet Cong remained active but never fielded large, well led and well equipped forces again. The North Vietnamese took over direct leadership of the fighting forces in the south and 7 years later marched into Saigon.
