From the earliest days of British occupation of Australia, the Government allowed the removal of Aboriginal children from their families. These children are known as the 'stolen generation.' They were raised in institutions, or fostered out to white families. Between 1910 and 1970 up to 100 000 Aboriginal children were taken forcibly or under duress from their families by welfare officers or police. The reasons for how and why these Aboriginal children were removed from their families will be discussed. The main motives behind the Government policy, reasons given by the government will be explored. How the children were taken and what happened to them will be explained.

The separation of Aboriginal children started in Victoria and New South Wales as early as 1885 and, in some states, was not stopped until the 1970s

Aboriginal children were taken from their families for a number of reasons.

  • Neglect/ abuse
  • to put the child into service
  • own welfare/ better living conditions
  • get them away from community
  • being of an age to be apprenticed

And plenty more reasons. in many cases, there was no reason given. Alot of the above reasons had not been proved. Children were placed in homes by the Aborigines Protection Board (APB) to be trained to work, on farms or in domestic service.

The most important thing in the Boards view, was that Aboriginal children

had to be separated from the rest of their race. One Annual Report of the 1920s

predicted that the children, once taken, would not be allowed to return

to any Aboriginal station or reserve, 'except perhaps those who have parents, on an occasional visit'. In practice no home visits were allowed at all. Parents received no encouragement to come, and were not allowed to stay more than a day. Even Christmas holidays were generally spent in the homes. Letters in and out were checked by matrons.

Little by little the view was put across that blacks on reserves were dirty, untrustworthy, bad. There was generally no Aboriginal staff to whom the children could relate. The homes ha a terrible and lasting effect on these children and their families. I encourage people to look into this a bit more.

Because Australia wanted an all white country? and maybe because the Aboriginal children were half-casts (half casts mean they have white in them- half aboriginal half white)! they were taken to missions (prison schools)

Children as young as babies were stolen from their families to be placed in girls and boys homes, foster families or missions. At the age of 18 they were 'released' into white society, often scarred for life by their experiences.

Today these Aboriginal people are collectively known as the 'Stolen Generations' because several generations were affected.

Many Aboriginal people are still searching for their fathers, mothers and siblings.

The European Australians took the young aboriginals as kids, away from their parents. They often called the babies ''blanket babies'' because they used to wrap the baby up so their mother can't see the young one. They took them away from their parents, family and yet their own culture. These children suffered highly from: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, suicide, poor health and socioeconomic outcomes. The reason they has all of these was due to being abused: psychologically, physically and sexually. The European people took the kids away from their family's because they think they should be taught in schools having an education and teach them posh manners. They thought that their culture was full of hate. But for a fact that the Indigenous people were there first is just unbelievable.

Why were Aboriginalchildren taken from their families?

Cause the children that were taken were part Aboriginal, part European (English) so the government thought they had the right to take the children.

Do you use apostrophe or no for the date During the early 1900s to 1960s 100000 children of the Aboriginal descent were taken away from their families?

No. Dates (years) should never have an apostrophe. It is a common mistake for people to write years with an apostrophe. It should be written as: During the early 1900s to 1960s, 100 000 children of Aboriginal descent were taken away from their families.

What have been some of the long-term effects of Aboriginal children being taken from their families?

Some indigenous children that were taken from their families had been violated, sometimes brutally. Many victims were sexually abused, and some welfare officials neglected their duty in caring for victims. Some of the stolen children never found their parents or family members and most of them still are distraught from the treatment they got as children. When the aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their families, this directly led to a loss of culture, language, customs and traditions among the Aborigines. When the Europeans first came to Australia, there were around 250 different aboriginal languages in Australia. There is just a fraction of that number now. Many stories from the aboriginal Dreaming (creation legends) have disappeared forever.

How many aboriginal children were taken in the stolen generation?

About 60,000 children

What happened to the aboriginal children during the stolen generation?

(full blooded aboriginal children were not taken away, only the half-caste children) They were taken away from their families. The 'white' Australians wanted to 'breed out' the half black half white blood in these children. They were forced to become like the whites and had to go to church etc. like the white people. It is commonly believed that full-blooded children were not taken away. This was not always the case. Full-blooded aboriginal children were also removed from their families during the attempts of the European-founded government to completely eradicate the Australian indigenous culture. The Stolen generation children were placed in institutions where the European language, erligion and culture was forced upon them.

In the Rabbit Proof Fence why were Molly Daisy and Gracie taken away?

This was typical action during the twentieth century in Australia. Aboriginal children were often removed from their families for a number of reasons, some of which are listed below:Aborigines were not seen as capable of looking after their own children. The prevailing belief was that white Australians could offer Aboriginal children a better education. The authorities hoped to remove all races of Aboriginal culture by removing the aboriginal children from where they would continue to hear the stories and participate in the traditions of their tribes.
