They knew that they may not be safe but the residents were on the side of the Allies, of course, and they knew that the Allies were just trying to win the war and help Dutch Jews and others being persecuted in Holland. They were, yes, scared, but that was just because, well, if gunshots were firing outside right now, you would be scared, too, of course. However, they learned to live with it. Hope this helps ;)
