Conditions on slave ships were bad for many reasons. Food was sometimes in short supply and they didn't have good ways to keep it fresh. There was no real medical care to speak of, and diseases spread quickly. Most times, the slaves were chained together and packed in so tightly, they could barely move.

They were simply commercial sailing ships of the time. They didn't have particular colors. Ships were wooden back then, so I would say brown.
