The French were anything BUT eager. They did not want to do anything to make the British angry with them, as they had little money to wage war with them.

After years of diplomacy and persuading, the Economic Amassador from Massachusetts to France, Ben Franklin, talked the King of France into supplying some money for the colonists to wage war with.

Also, a young aristocrat named Lafayette, who was friends with the King, agreed to go to America to help George Washington. Washington found the young Lafayette to be an excellent soldier and tactician, resulting in his naming Lafayette a general in the Continental Army. Lafayette became one of the best and most loyal of Washington's officers.
