There are continental glaciers in and around the Arctic and Antarctic circles, and covering parts of Greenland and other polar region islands.
The glaciers created the great lakes. Without the Great Lakes, there wouldn't be many places to fish. That's all I can think of right now, sorry if i wasn't of much help.
The two different glaciers are valley and continental glaciers and they are different because continental glaciers are the largest, and valley glaciers are on the top of mountain peaks.

I'm no expert, but I am assuming it has something to do with the direction the glaciers were moving.
Michigan was once covered by glaciers, which put an enormous amount of weight on the ground, compressing it. With the glaciers gone the ground is rebounding, and the resulting shifts can produce earthquakes. There may also be old faults left over from the formation of the continent or produced by stresses within the North American plate.
