The Order of the poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon was founded in Jerusalem after Christian forces took the city in 1099. The Order began with nine Knights and their support personnel. These nine Knights banded together as fighting monks- they lived in poverty, took a vow of celibacy and obeyed their superiors. As for the Temple of Solomon portion in the name of the Order, that comes from where the Knights were quartered in Jerusalem- Al Aqsa mosque on the old Temple Mount. It must be noted that travel in the Holy Land was hazardous at best- robbers, bandits, and others looking to make their fortune by taking advantage of pilgrims. The Archbishop of Jerusalem asked these Knights to protect the pilgrims as they made their way to the Holy Places to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Why the order was quartered on the old Temple Mount (near the Dome of the Rock) has sparked debate for hundreds of years- some say a buried treasure or ancient documents- others insist it may have been the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant or the True Cross.
