The Puritans in large part self exiled themselves. Originally the Puritans inhabited England, the term applied to those who wished to "purify" the Church of England as they believed it to still have too much "Catholic" identity. They exiled themselves to the European continent when the Church of England began to exercise abusive powers over religious dissenters.

In 1620 the Plymouth Company allowed the Puritans living in exile and in England to use their charter from the King of England. Many Puritans opted to make the voyage to the Americas in search of a chance at religious freedom and the creation of a "godly" community.
