Alsace-Lorraine is a region sandwiched between France and Germany and has always belonged to one or the other... and the country that did not have it wanted it. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, Prussia took Alsace-Lorraine to add to the coalition of German states that Prussia would form into a united Germany. They also laid siege to Paris and took a couple hundred thousand Frenchmen hostage, including the emperor, Napoleon III. In 1914, France was out for revenge. And, true to history, wanted Alsace-Lorraine back.
I think Germany took away Alsace-Lorraine, which is not a city but a region of France.
The Germans had won the Franco - Prussian war and had taken the territories Alsace and Lorraine away from France. The French began to hate the Germans. This could be a factor in the start to WWI.
Routine was so important in WW1 trenches because if it wasn't people could get lost or people could go places they weren't allowed and they could die
It was originally part of the Holy Roman Empire (most of which eventually became Germany). After the Thirty Years War (which ended in 1648), France took control of Alsace-Lorraine. After Prussia defeated France in 1871, Prussia retook it from France. This partly contributed to France's desire for revenge, often termed "revanchism". Prussia's victory in that war allowed them to create the German Empire, which was the basis of modern Germany. With Germany's defeat in World War I and the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, France retook the territory from Germany. Germany took control during their occupation of France during World War II, but France got it back afterward. France still controls it to this day.
King George the 5th.
France did regain the eastern regions of Alsace and Lorraine, which it had lost in the 1870 war against Prussia.

At the time, it included only Germany. It comprised territories in modern Denmark, Belgium, France, and Poland: Ribe/North Schleswig in Denmark. Eupen-Malmedy in Belgium (German-speaking, taken after WW1) Lorraine-Alsace in France (German-speaking, taken after WW1) Pommerania, Pommeralia, East and West Prussia, Posen, Silesia in Poland (mostly German-speaking, most taken after WW2, some after WW1)
Many reasons. First off, it depends what time period we are talking about. Both countries, quiet rightly wanted the land as they both wanted to expand; Alsace-Lorraine was in between them so both felt like it was a possible addition. Also, Alsace-Lorraine had a lot of German speaking people in it and was therefor strategically good for Germany. If we are talking 20th century, than France wanted it back as it was originally French until 1871 Franco-Prussian war, where Germany got hold of it. Ever since this, France wanted the land back (and it did get it back after the first World War, in 1919, thanks to the terms of the Treaty of Versailles), however, obviously, Germany did not want to give it back. After this, Germany wanted revenge and so it invaded France again in 1940. Hope this helps. :P
