The peace treaties with Sparta and Persia in the middle of the 5th century BC were important in that they recognized the Athenian empire and the right of Athens to coerce their allies. The treasury at Delos was moved to Athens and subscriptions paid there became tribute to Athens. This greatly enriched the City of Athens.

The treaty with Persia ended the later phase of the Persian War in which Athens had led the Asiatic Greek cities. It let Athens turn the 180 city-states of the Delian League into an empire which now was used to fund Athenian lifestyle and military force.

The treaty wit Sparta ended conflict from 460 BCE for a nominated period of 30 years, which it exploited in standing over some of Sparta's natural allies. It collapsed into the peloponnesian War when Sparta's request for Athenian disengagement was spurned by an over-confident Athens.

Then part way through this war, the Persians gained retribution for its defeat by Athens by sided with the Spartan alliance and provided them the means to gain a fleet which defeated Athens.

Athens and Sparta were important because they loved to fight in war, without them the rest of Greece would probably been taken over by other countries who were spying to capture them.

It was Athens against Persia. Athens helped Miletus (another city-state) in a battle against Persia. Athenians didn't actually fight, they just helped Miletus by giving them ships and weapons.
