Why were there no American women on the US Supreme Court until 1981?

The US Supreme Court was composed entirely of white men until African-Americans and women gained enough political strength to begin overcoming institutional racism and sexism. People who are vocal and assertive about gaining their civil rights, and are willing to vote as a bloc, wield political power. Political power makes opportunities available that were previously unattainable.
Thurgood Marshall, Sandra Day O'Connor, Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Sonia Sotomayor owe their positions on the Court in large part to the civil rights and women's rights movements that gained massive popular support in the 1960s and 70s.
None of these people were passive recipients of others' efforts, however. All committed to causes larger than themselves, and to the persuit of personal and academic excellence.
