one of the cables need adjusted or there is a switch on top of the brake pedal that needs adjusted.
I had this same issue; the white tube/spring assembly that you disassembled to remove the shifting unit is the problem. Go back to it and make sure the plunger thing is pushed far enough inside of the white sleeve.
SOMETIMES IF THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED YOU WONT BE ABLE TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK. TRY JIGGERING THE STEERING WHEEL AROUND.

Check to see if the brake lights are working shift interlock and stop lights are a common circuit. Try turning the key to 1st (unlock) position shift to neutral to start and then shift to Drive
You have a bad Park neutral switch in the steering column or a problem w/ the circuit. check a wire diagram for this circuit
start the car, or move the key to the 'ACC' position and step on the brake - then take out the little black catch-all thing next to the shifter and find the little pink button under the shift plate and push it. while holding it down, you should be able to shift out of park. same thing happened on my 2008 dodge avenger,dealer said it was due to a part that melted and was replaced under warranty.

Check for a blown brake light fuse. Check for a broken or out of adjustment brake light switch.
