I had the same problem. The plastic spacer inside the shifter handle is slipping past whatever it hits on the bottom side. If you pull up real hard on the top of the tee (the part your palm rests on), you will pull it off and see what I am talking about.

On an automatic transmission Jeep Wrangler there are two dipsticks. The engine oil dipstick is on the side of the motor, while the transmission dipstick is at the rear of the engine.
You should use atf +4 in your wrangler transmission
If it's the arrow-shaped one in the dashboard of an automatic transmission Jeep, then it's supposed to indicate when you are supposed to up-shift.
You have to remove the pan if there is no drain plug
