What causes an engine to only run when the choke is on is not enough fuel getting to the engine. When the choke is on a plate inside the air intake closes so the engine sucks in more fuel which makes the engine easier to start when cold.The first thing to do is if the gas is more than 15-30 days old dump it out of the gas tank and run the engine until it stalls and will not restart. Fill the tank with fresh gas and see if you still have problems. If that fixes it you can stop there. Gas goes bad in 15-30 days and will cause the engine to run rough, and stall. If you still have problems empty the gas tank into a gas can and add 1/2 of an ounce (15ML) of Royal Purple Max clean to one gallon of fresh gas in the can. Before adding the mix to the leaf blower start the engine and let it run until it stalls and will not restart. Now fill the tank with the 1 gallon of fresh gas with 1/2 of an ounce (15ML) of Royal Purple Max clean mixed in.

You might check your primer bulb. Mine was cracked and the only way it would run was with the choke on about half way. I changed the primer bulb -- problem solved. Hope this helps.
