most likely the teeth on the flywheel that the starter connects with are ground down. Either way, you need to remove starter to look, starter gear not likely bad , but possible. But, if this is a Ford with a separate starter solenoid, that will be your problem. Ford first! Solenoid second!
if it wont crank the the starter is probally out but if it cranks and the motor doesnt turn either the belt is to loose or the engine is locked up
When you say 'crank over' are you saying the engine won't do anything? First check your battery and then your starter or starter solenoid. You can turn the crank to check if the block is seized or not.
IF YOUR MODEL HAS AN INLINE STARTER RELAY (BIG BLUE IDENTIFIED IN ENGINE ROOM) IT MAY HAVE FAILED. IF NOT THEN CHK FOR POWER AT STARTER, IF IT HAS POWER THEN STARTER IS BAD.
Push the starter. Crank the engine. Turn the key.
does the motor spin..ie..crank? if no possible locked up engine..try spinning it by hand..correct size socket on front crank bolt turning clockwise.. possible bad starter motor does the starter engage when the key is in the crank possition. if the motor does crank your looking at a fuel or ignition problem
your crank sensor has absolutly nothing to do with the ability of the engine turning over. I would look at the wiring to the starter.
Seized engine? Loose or cooroded battery terminal Bad starter solenoid? Bad neutral or clutch safety switch?
Since the starter is good but will not turn the engine over when hot, check the engine for free rotation. Turn the engine over by moving the crank by hand (with the ignition off.) The engine could be sticking when hot and not be able to turn over.
If you can crank the engine over by turning the key: First connect a voltmeter and an ammeter. Then disable the ignition. Note the voltage and amp draw of the starter while cranking. If voltage is too low or amperage too high (check service manual for specifications) it is bad. Otherwise, remove those meters and use an oscilloscope to look for any irregularities in the waveform. If any irregularities exist, the starter is bad. Otherwise, it is probably good. If you cannot crank the engine: Check for BatteryV- at the body of the starter, BatteryV+ at the big wire to the starter and (only while turning key to crank) BatteryV+ at the small wire to the starter. If one or more of these is not present, correct this problem before continuing testing of the starter. Now check that the starter makes some sound (at least a click) while turning key to crank If not, starter solenoid (part of starter) is bad. Otherwise, remove starter from engine but leave electrical connections in place. Turn key to crank. If it doesn't crank, starter is bad, otherwise starter cranks and proceed to testing as if you can crank the engine by turning the key as described above.
usually you can tell when your car doesnt turn or or doesnt turn over its because of your starter sometimes its not the starter it could be a low battery or corroded wires leading to the starter check that first;
If the engine does not even crank, it is battery or starter related. Check all connections and the charge of the battery itself.If it does crank, it can be 25 additional reasons why engine does not start.
Probably the starter, have someone turn the key to the crank position while you gently tap the starter with a hammer or bar. If it starts change the starter. If not try shorting the starter solenoid to see if that works.
