Because even though the electronics in the car run off the battery the alternator is constantly putting a charge back in the battery as long as the engine is running.

no, usually it will be a fuse. a battery would simply dim the lights to beyond usefulness, and if it gets too low, the pcm may start killing unneeded components.
The fuse location for the head lights on a 1996 Nissan is in the engine compartment. You will need to open the hood and look between the battery and the driver side.
