Defective starter solenoid.
It's the key or ignition or both I speak from experience I had the EXACT problem.I checked the battery, the starter, silinoid, starter relay and nothing.Everything was still good.I took it to a Ford dealer and had my key replacedand vehicle reprogramed. It worked

Alternator straining to maintain battery charge?
Do you have lights? If not, you r battery is probably discharged. I guess there could be a problem with the starter circuit. I believe this has a fuse in the underhood fuse block.
These could all be symptoms of a very low battery.
sounds like a flat battery
When the battery does not have enough voltage to turn the starter over it will sometimes make a clicking noise.
Weak battery? Loose or corroded battery cables? Starter solenoid?
If you have power after recharging the battery (turn on lights) , If lights come on before turning the engine, and you still have no power, It sounds like your starter. You may have to take it out and take it to a auto parts store and have them check it.
Does the engine turn over and then make the clicking noise while trying to start, or does it not do anything but make the clicking noise when you turn the key. If its not turning over at all then it might be a battery problem, Try cleaning the battery terminals, and/or charge the battery, Could also be the starter solenoid, but start with the battery first.
A weak battery would do that
you have a bad tire or a bad wheel bearing i had this in my 2004 explorer twice, a tire, then a bearing the bearing makes more noise when turning right to left when traveling
most likely your battery is bad if it wont hold a charge unless there is a significant parasitic drain i have no clue on what causes the ticking noise
