the only thing i can think of is the safety switch in the transmission... it detects anything wrong with transmission and kills the engine to prevent damage. you disconnect that and the engine wont run at all, wont even crank.

If the engine was run with no oil in it, it could have seized the engine and it wouldn't crank over, in which case the engine is ruined.
