In your Truck it wont change gears in drive but it will in reverse could it be the transmission in it or the cadalac converter?
It's probably the transmission, either the valve body or the clutch pack. Either way, it means a rebuild of the transmission.

It needs to be in park or neutral to start. All cars have a "safety" switch which prevents starting in gear.

this is a typical problem with berettas, for some reason the bands in the transmission will not hold out after several miles are on the car, have the bands tightened or replaced, and you wont have any more problems

I mean this seriously: Where you can get a good used replacement. There is nothing external that can be the cause, it has had a serious internal failure and either needs overhaul or replacement
