AnswerOn most cars the overdrive is on when you start the car and put it in gear. This is the D (drive) with a circle around it meaning "overdrive". Cars with a center console shifter the overdrive button is usually on the side of the gear shift.You will know if the OD is off because a light on the dash will come on that says O/D off. If it is off there is usually a button on the gear shifter if you have a center console on down on the console next to the shifter.

the sensor is under the center console, about 6 inches behind the gear shift.
lift up the center plate on the console were your gear select is after you remove your shift lever and all the lever pieces and there you can remove the top of the console and the bottom has 4 bolts 10mm remove those and you shift your car all the way down to first or low gear and lift it up un plug the harness and there you go
The 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix gear selector wire can be found beneath the center console. The gear selector wire will go to the instrument panel.

Pry out the gear selector trim with a screwdriver and lift it out.Open the console lid and remove the screws on the bottom.Remove the screws on both sides of the console.Lift the console up and over the shift lever.Disconnect any electrical connections and remove the console from vehicle.
Behind the gear lever is a sliding box, open it. Lift the "wood" from the open box and start unscrewing screws. there is another screw in the big box behind the slider box. two mor screws in front at the ash tray and your done.
You will need to remove the center console cover. The lightbulb will be attached to the inside of the center console. Push the lightbulb in and turn at the same time to remove it. Reverse the process to install the new lightbulb.

The most likely cause is a failing shift lock switch in the center console. This switch prevents the gear shift lever from moving until the brake pedal is depressed.
